Jan 26 Haiti Relief Update

January 26, 2010 – Yesterday, Salvation Army relief workers in Haiti distributed 231,000 meals to displaced families staying in "tent cities" located around its compound in Port-au-Prince. At the end of the distribution the grateful crowd broke out in spontaneous applause.

The food distribution was aided by the US Army's 82nd Airborne. The meals were packaged in the USA at Salvation Army units in Des Moine, IA and El Dorado, KS with the help of the nonprofit Numana.

In addition to these emergency meals, an airplane with an additional 52,000 pounds of relief supplies left Miami and arrived in Port-au-Prince yesterday bringing the total weight of Salvation Army supplies delivered to Haiti to 132,000 pounds. The supplies included 350,000 meals, 18,480 gallons of water and 260 tents as well as tarps, baby items and assorted medical supplies.

Salvation Army medical teams in Port-au-Prince aided 300 people on Monday with various injuries and reports a decrease in severe trauma.

The Salvation Army "make-shift" school provided classes for 100 preschoolers yesterday. Staff reported the highlight of the day was a gift of 12 soccer balls for the group to play with.
